"Once there was a famous Zen master who was very fond of telling stories.
One of his favorites was the tale of the Scorpion and the Fox. In the tale Fox and Scorpion want to cross a large river. Scorpion knows the best place to cross but could not make it by himself, so he offers to tell Fox of the place if Fox will let him ride on his back. Fox agrees, but half way across the river Scorpion stings him. As Fox begins to become paralyzed he asks Scorpion why he stung him for now they will both drown. Scorpion replies 'I can not change my nature'.
The Zen master would often tell this story to his students. He told this story so many times that one of his students became bored with it, and complained the next time the Master started the story that there was nothing new to be learned from it. Without heeding the student’s outburst the master continued telling the tale as he always had, but at the very end when Fox asks Scorpion why he stung him this time the Scorpion replied ‘I can swim’ “
